Happy New Year! (and recent new work)

Yes, it's been rather quiet here at Hominy Grits HQ, the Holidays and what-not has completely thrown me off the self-promotional track.  The painting proceeds apace, with several new works recently completed, and many more 'on the easel.' Here are a few shots from my flickr feed:

More is in store for 2014! Have a happy and safe New Year!

How I spent my summer: recently completed works and other news

It doesn't quite feel like it outside today, but summer is more or less over.  And boy, was it was a busy one!  I've completed several paintings over the past few months as well as putting together a show at the offices of Thoughtworks, in Manhattan. (Did you see the pics of the show? Check them out here.)

I was also interviewed by Stephanie Guasp of ArtInLimbo.com, the resulting article, "Lifeworlds and the Square", is well worth a read!  Stephanie and I had a nice conversation about my work, the use of the square in fine art and sundry other arty things.

Speaking of Lifeworlds, I've completed several more:
Lifeworld 15

Lifeworld 13

Lifeworld 14

I've also been working on some mountain inspired landscapes:

Paysage Planétaire (Brenta 3)
I've been adding the new works to my website, and been making some navigational improvements there as well. Please check it out and let me know what you think!

The folks over at Artsicle have also had a busy summer, rolling out "Artsicle Open." I've added several more works to my Artsicle collection and plan to add several more very soon.  Check out my collection here.

What's up next?  I'm now in the midst of preparations for this year's Gowanus Open Studios, October 19-20.  Check out the official website for more details.  And, Artsicle is also the official provider of Gowanus Artist profiles for the Tour -- the see the Collection of Gowanus Open Studios Artists here!

Whew!  That was a lot!  If you've read this far, then thank you very much!  I hope to see you around the art world soon!

We had the opening reception this past Thursday for my show of paintings at Thoughtworks in New York City, up now through August 29.  The show looks great! Thanks to everyone for coming out.  I've uploaded a selection of photographs of the exhibition to my flickr photostream.  A few of which are included here:

Thoughtworks Opening is this Thursday

The previously announced show at the New York Offices of Thoughtworks is now up. We put up the show this past Friday, and it looks great! Below are a few pics of the artwork waiting for the movers at my studio, then in the process of hanging.

The opening reception is this Thursday, June 27, from 6 to 8 pm.  Location: Thoughtworks in New York, 99 Madison Avenue, 15th Floor.  This is at the corner of Madison and 29th Street.

Studio dispatches: latest behind the scenes news

I've been busily preparing for the upcoming Thoughtworks Exhibition (and the studio has become woefully cramped with all the prep work going on), but am continuing to work on new pieces.  This past week, I finished another mountain landscape, which I am tentatively titling Paysage planétaire (Brenta 2).  A preliminary photo of the painting, still wet on the easel is below:
20130611_005
(Brenta 1 is pictured here.)  These paintings are inspired by my recent trip to Italy, and also by the stupendous mountain landscapes of Swiss artist Ferdinand Hodler (1853-1918).  The "Brenta" in question is a range in the Dolomite Alps -- the Grupo di Brenta in Trentino.  While completing Brenta 2, a process that took 2-3 hours, I also experimented with Vine: the Twitter owned video app that makes creating stop-motion video a snap (almost).  Here is my nearly first attempt at Vine;  Rather shaky, but very interesting.  A lot of possibilities here, don't you think?

I'm also continuing with my "Lifeworlds" series (more on the ideas behind that sometime soon).  Here are a few 'in progress' shots to contemplate:

Announcing an exhibition of paintings at Thoughtworks

I'm pleased to announce a solo exhibition of my paintings at the New York offices of Thoughtworks, a software consulting firm with offices worldwide.  The show will be up from June 21 through August 29, and the opening reception will be on Thursday, June 27 from 6 to 8 pm.

Thoughworks is located at 99 Madison Avenue, near 29th Street, on the 15th floor, in Manhattan.

In this exhibition I am bringing together a selection of my work dating from 2010 to the present, including several new pieces never before exhibited.  Featured are abstracted landscapes and tree portraits influenced by musings on city living, nature and the meaning of it all. Also included is one painting from my “Calamus” series -- paintings inspired by the poetry of Walt Whitman.

So, I hope you will join me Thursday June 27 from 6 to 8!  Don't hesitate to contact  me with any questions.

Arts Gowanus begins planning for 2013 Gowanus Studio Tour

Last night I attended a Gowanus Studio Tour kick-off meeting/party at the Bell House in Brooklyn.  Pretty exciting!  The tour is still months away, but already things are gearing up.  This year's tour will be on the weekend of October 18-20.  Specifically, the open studios will be Saturday, October 19 and Sunday, October 20 from noon to six, with other events being planned for the evenings.

Arts Gowanus has a new website, and lots of fresh ideas.  I think this will be the biggest and best Gowanus tour yet.  So mark your calendars and stay tuned for more info as things develop!

At long last, the new John Azelvandre Fine Art website is now live!

I'm pleased to announce that my all-new, completely rebuilt fine art website, www.azelvandre.net is now live and accepting visitors.  I've completely reconstructed this site using Adobe Muse.  I'm pleased with the results, and I hope you are too.  And, of course, its up to date with recent work as well.

Check it out, and let me know what you think!

New work

Well, it appears that Spring has finally arrived after what seemed like an interminable Winter.  While the temperatures remained decidedly un-Springlike, I was busy in the studio working on more verdant visions.  Here are some recently completed paintings:

Manomayakaya #3 (Let it pervade everywhere)
Manomayakaya #3 (Let it pervade everywhere), oil on canvas, 30x30"

Lifeworld 11
Lifeworld 11, oil on canvas, 20x20". Ok, so this one is not so "verdant," strictly speaking, but you get the idea.

Lifeworld 12
and, finally, Lifeworld 12, also oil on canvas, 20x20"
