Breaking news from the green front

This just in from my contact at the Sierra Club (New York Group):

"Demonstration Against Bogus Forest Certification Program,
the Sustainable Forestry Initiative

"A Coalition of organizations, including the Sierra Club, Natural Resources
Defense Council
, ForestEthics, and other organizations, are holding a
demonstration protesting the Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI) of the
American Forest and Paper Association (AF&PA), a bogus forest product
certification program that is greenwashing destructive logging practices
and presenting their products to retailers and the public as ecologically
sound through the SFI label. These destructive practices include the
logging of old growth and endangered forests and endangered species'
habitats, the replacement of natural forests with plantations and sprawl,
and excessive use of clearcuts and chemicals. The following is a link to
a report describing this bogus and deceptive certification program:

http://www.americanlands.org/sfi_reports.htm

"The certification of sustainable, ecologically sound forestry is an
important tool for forest conservation and the protection of the rights of
forest communities, indigenous people, and forest workers. It is
essential that this vehicle for ecologically sound forestry not be
corrupted by a bogus certification program such as SFI that seek to
confuse consumers and co-opt the certification movement.

"The demonstration will be held in New York City on March 23rd at the Waldorf-Astoria during
the American Forest & Paper Association's 27th annual Paper Week
meeting. This demonstration will be part of a larger "Don't Buy SFI"
campaign occurring this year by a large coalition of environmental groups.
Among other goals, we seek to end the AF&PA greenwashing by demonstrating
that use of the SFI label and claims means trouble for AF&PA and its SFI
"certified" member companies, who will be attending this meeting in
force. The demonstration will be totally legal, with no civil disobedience,
and the police precinct has already been informed and will be helpful in
allowing us to carry out the demonstration, exercising our rights to free
speech.

"The demonstration will take place at:

The Waldorf-Astoria
301 Park Avenue
between 49th and 50th Street
Manhattan

on Tuesday, March 23rd
between 9:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m."

So, if you're in New York on March 23rd, why don't you stop by?
