I walked by the canal at approximately 4:00 pm local time today. The tide was out and the water was filthy; little swirls of iridescent oil on the surface. The smell was of rotten eggs. Probably anaerobic decomposition below the water. Languid bubbles of who-knows-what slowly drifted to the surface. No sign of life otherwise.
